Epilogue

June 4, 1999. We had less than a week left on our six-year sentences. Once released, we were required to complete an additional thirty days in a halfway house at an approved location. We were both granted permission for re-location to New Orleans. After six years of trying to figure out what to do with the rest of our lives, it was finally time to execute our plan.

Amina was still very passionate about her dreams to become a hip-hop artist and I was going to be her manager. Tyree still dabbled in the music industry and was determined to find the world’s greatest entertainer. Amina definitely fit the bill. I figured since he owed me a favor for not selling him out on the drug charge, it was time to cash in. But first, we had to complete her demo tape. Once Tyree got a taste of Amina, he would be sold. Getting Amina into the rap game was only a small piece to the puzzle. I had big plans for Tyree due in part to some information that I got from Ladasia. In the days that lead up to her death, she must have felt the need to purge. Before everything was said and done, Tyree would regret the day he decided to cross me and he wouldn’t be the only one.

The day finally came. I didn't sleep at all the night before, with so many thoughts floating in my head. I couldn’t wait to see my family. Six years of telephone calls and pictures had been my only contact between with my family. How would Little Ty respond to me? Could he ever forgive me for my absence?

“Ongell Jackson and Dana Toussaint. Today’s your lucky day,” the prison guard smirked.

She held out the “get out of jail outfits” that we’d purchased a few months back.

“Looks like you got family coming down for your release. I hope they're aware of the fact that transportation from here to your final destination is provided by our facility.”

“Yes, they’re aware.”

“Well what are you waiting for? You got thirty minutes to shower and get dressed,” she said with a bigger smile.

She was one of my favorite guard because she seemed to really care about us.

I was ready in fifteen minutes and sat on the edge of my bunk. Amina was right behind me.

“I can’t believe we’re really leaving, Dana.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m afraid I’ll wake up and discover this is all a dream.”

“Grab your things, ladies. It’s time to go,” the guard said.

Amina and I both had one laundry bag apiece, mostly filled with pictures and mail. We left our clothes, shoes and other personal items to anyone that wanted them. The gesture almost caused a huge brawl as the ladies scrambled to claim our “valuable” items.

Amina’s family decided not to make the trip down to Texas, opting instead to await our arrival in New Orleans. I tried to persuade my family to do the same, but they weren’t having it.

Alex was the first person that I saw when I turned the corner at the end of the long corridor.
